Middle income housing affordability in the Bay Area presents a complex set of issues and questions:

● What does it mean to be a middle-income resident of the Bay Area?
● How have the region’s housing affordability challenges changed who can live here?
● What is happening to people who can’t afford housing in the Bay Area?
● What can policymakers do to create housing options affordable for middle-income people who want to call the Bay Area home?

Our latest report Losing Ground: What the Bay Area’s Housing Crisis Means for Middle-Income Households and Racial Inequality seeks to answer these questions. The dire Bay Area housing picture captured by our research has implications for the region’s economic and racial diversity. We need to address housing scarcity by creating a healthy housing market — that is, one that creates enough market-rate housing to meet the demand and means of middle-income households and even the needs of some lower-income households.

Join us for a deep dive of the report and panel discussion to explore the findings and what it means for communities in the Bay Area. Sarah Karlinsky and Tim Cornwell will present the data followed by a conversation with Adam Briones, Charmaine Curtis, and Ben Metcalf.

Speakers:

Adam Briones, CEO, California Community Builders
Tim Cornwell, Principal, The Concord Group
Charmaine Curtis, Principal, Curtis Development
Sarah Karlinsky, Senior Advisor, SPUR
Ben Metcalf, Managing Director, Terner Center for Housing Innovation
