Event Details

Cable cars are synonymous with San Francisco, but do you know about their history? The world’s last manually operated cable car system and an iconic San Francisco attraction, the three remaining lines of the cable car system have remained essentially unchanged since its invention in 1873 by an engineer Andrew Hallidie. At night, these historic cars take rest in the cable car barn and powerhouse on Mason Street, where they are meticulously maintained to preserve this piece of San Francisco history. Join SPUR for a special tour of the cable car barn to see where these historic cars reside when they’re not in operation, and how they’re restored so locals and tourists alike can continue to enjoy their rides through the city.
