California’s housing governance system is vast and sprawling. Through three layers of government — state, regional, and local — many agencies, offices, departments, and systems are responsible for planning and funding housing. These many governmental layers frequently work at odds with one another. The result? California is vastly underproducing the housing its residents need. Come join us for a members-only advance briefing on SPUR’s latest policy report: Structured for Success: Reforming Housing Governance in California and the Bay Area.

This report recommends solutions to create a better housing governance system in California and the Bay Area, including the creation of a new state housing agency, streamlining for California’s affordable housing finance system, and a new look at regional planning requirements. A conversation with Kate Gordon, Visiting Scholar, UC Berkeley Haas School of Business and former Director, Governor's Office of Planning and Research will follow.
