This April, SPUR is hosting an Earth Month exhibit titled, Watermarks. Watermarks explores San Francisco's local challenges with extreme storms, flooding, and sea level rise in the face of climate change – and the Climate change can feel perpetually like a future problem, making it difficult to connect the decisions of today to the future of tomorrow. This exhibit is meant to engage viewers in the past, present, and future of San Francisco’s waterfront through imaginative installations of San Francisco’s future through images from an augmented reality tour of the City’s waterfront (which exhibit attendees can go on when leaving the exhibit) to real-life actions that the City is taking to addressing impacts of extreme storms and sea level rise that are already leading to flooding in various locations in the City. This exhibit brings the past, present, and future of San Francisco’s waterfront to life, immersing visitors in the realities of rising seas and the resilience needed to adapt. Through imaginative installations, an augmented reality tour of the shoreline, and real-world examples of the City’s ongoing efforts, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the impacts of extreme storms and flooding—and the opportunities for rethinking our relationship with water. Visitors will leave not just with knowledge, but with an action they can take to shape the future of the waterfront.
Sea level rise can feel perpetually like a future problem, making it difficult to connect the decisions of today to the future of tomorrow. This exhibit is meant to engage viewers in the past, present, and future of San Francisco’s waterfront through imaginative installations of San Francisco’s future through images from an augmented reality tour of the city’s shoreline (which attendees can go on when leaving the exhibit), to real-life actions that the City is taking to addressing impacts of extreme storms and sea level rise that are already leading to flooding in various locations in the City. Viewers will learn about the City, current actions underway, and ways to get involved. We will leave viewers with an action to take as they exit the exhibit and return to their lives. Although sea level rise is a challenge to solve today, it can also create new opportunities for relating to the Bayshore, new ways to live with water, and new ways to consider our place in the changing world.
