Guaranteed income – direct, unconditional and unrestricted cash assistance to individuals or households – is a policy response to systemic poverty and rising inequality, particularly during a pandemic that has brutally exacerbated these problems. Interest in guaranteed income is surging, with more than 100 pilot programs in development or underway nationally, including nearly a dozen pilots in San Francisco alone.
