DESCRIPTION: San Francisco has 126 commissions, boards, and advisory bodies that are made up of over 1200 residents who provide input to public officials in specific issue areas, such as health, policing, and planning. When functioning well, commissions facilitate public engagement, provide transparency, and help hold the city accountable for delivering public services that are equitably allocated, accessible, and responsive to community needs. SPUR’s recent report Designed to Serve finds that the purpose, roles, and responsibilities of the city’s many boards and commissions are often unclear. Two separate ballot measures in front of San Francisco voters this year seek to do an evaluation of them, however there are different ideas circulating about the criteria that should be used to assess them.
